Hello All!
Back again. I am currently sick, so forgive me for not keeping up with the blog. I think I have been sick now for a month and yes I've been to the doctor's it is verial. So anyways, I have a few movie rants for you all today. 1. House of 1000 Corpses (old, I know but it's awesome.) 2. The Devils Rejects. 3. The Ward. Believe it or not all these movies have something to do in common with each other and it's not the fact that their horror or their movie plots at all. Okay let's start with House of 1000 Corpses written and directed by the wonderful Rob Zombie. Let me start off with I saw this movie in theaters when it came out and I was completely shocked, surprised and feel right in love with it. I loved the cinematography in it. I think what most audiences (the ones that did see it) liked about it was for some odd reason you felt a connection with most of his characters, to some degree you understood why Mother Firefly, Grandpa, Tiny, Otis, RJ, Captain Spaulding, and how can we not forget Baby. Did what they did. Maybe not necessarily in that exact context. But the movie sets it up for that as soon as Mary is a bitch to Baby and insults the family. Now mind you there have been little bits of insults about being rednecks and whatever throughout the beginning of it, before the Firefly Family takes over and tortures them. What was interesting was that this movie opened up to 595 screens and grossed 3,460,666. Haha 666...interesting. Moving on, reception of the film was not the greatest. You either loved it or hated it. Most didn't like it. But the many people that did, did something beautiful...they gave it A CULT FOLLOWING! Cult followings are something that are absolutely amazing in film society. There are so many movies out there that have cult followings..I will name a few later. But because House got a cult following it actually grossed more and people started dressing up like the characters. (Let's not get that statement confused with the idea of Rocky Horror. I have never heard of anyone dressing up like Baby or Otis to go see House of 1000 Corpses live). Rob Zombie's sequel to House was The Devil's Rejects which seemed to focus more on the three; Captain Spaulding, Baby and Otis, instead of the family as a whole. But this story didn't have the same "campy" sort of atmosphere. It was like they where in actual reality. What I loved about this was that they where out to defend what they have done, all the murders, etc. but the main thing with this one is that Rob made it specifically for viewers to either love them or you where on the sheriff's side and wanted them dead and gone. If you have seen the movie then you know how it ends if you haven't then I won't say much if at all. I sort of liked this one, the only thing I thought was too much was the sexual assault scene. I don't think anyone is a fan of those types of scenes but still I thought the movie could've done without it, but I think it was mainly in there for more of a shock value kind of thing coming from Otis's character. Overall both movies are absolutely amazing and the cinematography in both is amazing along with special make up effects. But I am a huge fan of "campy" cults...so House of 1000 Corpses wins for me.
Last night Ray and I watched something called The Ward. It was so absolutely amazing. I don't say that very much, especially when it's a new thriller/horror movie. This movie premises is around 1966 and we start off in the woods with a girl running in a nightie. Oh how cliche. But the movie does pick up from there and the girl that we see running burns down a house and then is captured by cops and later sent to the state hospital. From there she is sent into the women's ward and from there it just get's really intense. i won't go and spoil it but it is a very good movie. at alas that's what you get when John Carpenter to direct it. And coming to conclusion what does House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects and The Ward all have to do with each other? Rob Zombie remade John Carpenter's Halloween. And did an amazing job to boot. Words of wisdom from one of these movies today; If I had three wishes, one of them would be "Send me back to the '40s and the studio system and let me direct movies." Because I would have been happiest there. I feel I am a little bit out of time. I have much more of a kinship for older-style films, and very few films that are made now interest me at all. I get up and walk out on them." - john Carpenter
